Vertical Wave

Vertical Wave during Busan Biennale
Sea Art Festival 2019

The site-specific community art project “Vertical Wave” unites people from diverse cultures, ethnicities, and communities. To create this massive installation, I use clothes that act as a “second skin,” offering security, beauty, and comfort. Clothes have long symbolized status and human civilization. For this work, I stitched 1,500 old clothes into a tapestry 108 meters long, symbolizing spiritual and cosmic connections.

By collecting clothes from multiple communities, the project affirms love, regeneration, and shared history. Recycling these garments connects personal stories and emotional values. With the help of neighbors, we sew clothes together, creating unity, sharing memories, and building mutual respect. The act of stitching with thin white thread reflects positivity, love, and human connection.

The colorful tapestry forms a human wave, representing dignity, self-respect, and belonging. It embraces trees and the ocean, symbolizing respect for nature. The vertical wave reflects humanity’s responsibility to protect the environment and reconnect with its roots. As a man from the Himalayas, I aim to connect souls from heights to the sea, expressing collective energy, unity, and multidimensional human dynamism.
